About Sustrans
We’re Sustrans - a leading UK charity enabling people to travel by foot, bike and public transport for more of the journeys we make every day.
2010 is a special year for us as it marks 15 years of the National Cycle Network, one of our greatest achievements. In September 1995 we were the first charity to receive funding from the newly created National Lottery towards developing a network of walking and cycling routes across the UK.
Since then, both the length and popularity of the National Cycle Network have grown enormously.
Today the Network is made up of over 12,000 miles of traffic-free walking and cycling paths, quiet lanes and on-road cycling routes stretching the length and breadth of the UK. Every single day more than a million walking and cycling journeys are made on the Network, taking people to work and school, to the shops, through green spaces, and out into the fresh air for exercise and fun.
As you can tell, we’ve come a long way since 1995. Through growing the Network certainly, but also through the other work we do with communities, families, businesses, partners and policy-makers so people can make healthier, cleaner and cheaper journeys. So that we all have better places and spaces to move through and live in.
