  • A short video on Sustrans and the National Cycle Network in the UK and what it means to me.

I stop at the highest point on the NCN and explain what all the fuss is about.

It's very hilly around the place where I filmed this. I make a big effort to cycle out of Neanthead towards Garrigill. That is one serious hill!

I cycled from Durham to the Lake District and back. If you would like to see my cycling trip in more detail then please check out my previous two videos. This two minute video has been produced as part of my Sustrans competition entry to win a short stay holiday for my family!

  • Mike Newton & his wife Naoko Motohiro of GASBAGS set out from Great Ayton on April 14th to go to Southport to get to the start of the Trans Pennine Trail. Their plan was to cycle it in 4 days with a day at either end to get to/from the trail. The days were longer than expected due to slow cycling through towns & villages and going through numerous barriers aimed to stop motorbikes. However we both enjoyed the cycling and the achievement.

  • Our five day experience of doing the C2C route was fantastic for its variety: railway tracks, country lanes, lush lakeside roads, massively challenging hills, crazy helter skelter 'downs' , villages, cities, beaches, moorland, farmland i.e everything. We loved the way it brought you into a 'close-up' way of looking at England and all the different types of landscape it has in it.

We especially liked the way you have to weave around the towns e.g at the beginning at Whitehaven -- to get to the cycling only routes and cycle-friendly quiet roads. It felt like a kind of rerouting -- although obviously it's Sustrans which has painstakingly provided all the signs, and organised the best way of travelling by foot/bike. It felt like being liberated from the normal confines of travelling.

It's surprising just how quickly you can get up a hill under your own bodily effort. It was great how you could share the experience with everyone you met and re-met -- discussing weight on bikes, bike weight and -- big subject -- hills, as well as the especially good bits -- like reaching the top of Hartside hill.

Above all though, it was the 'weaving' part that was best.

  • Cycling doesn't mean that you have to be in with the traffic. The National Cycle Network helps to keep you away from traffic, on quieter roads and dedicated cycleways. You can traverse the entire country using the network or simply connect to places in your local area. For those who would like to cycle or return to cycling this video brings some good news!
